Rafael Nadal has no worries following his Monday practice session with Daniil Medvedev, who later tested positive for Coronavirus.
Reigning Roland Garros champion Nadal hit with Medvedev on Monday at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. The next day, the second-ranked Russian tested positive for Coronavirus and was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
More: Business as Usual for Nadal
In the aftermath of his opening win over Federico Delbonis at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters today, Nadal said he has no worries because he was never too close to Medvedev during their hit.
"I was not worried because I practiced with him, but I was never close to him," Nadal said. "Honestly, no. Of course, when these kind of stuff happens, is not good. But I felt sorry for him more than for me because, well, everything can happen, of course, yes.
"I mean, as much as I know about the way that you can be infected was not the way that I was supposed to be infected practicing with Daniil because I never have been in touch with him, never have been closer than four meters, something like that. Just at the end to say thanks for one second. Anything can happen, of course."
Australian Open finalist Medvedev, who maintains residence in Monte-Carlo, has been in isolation and under the tournament physician's care since testing positive on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Nadal says he will get vaccinated as soon as possible.
"I will be vaccinated when I have the possibility," Nadal said. "The general interest is what has to move us, and that's the logical thing to do. It's the only way out of this nightmare.
"There may be a small number of people suffering from side effects, but overall the effects of the virus are much worse."
