Video: Polish Doubles Team Loses after Headshot Leaves Player Crumpled
The Polish doubles team of
Mateusz Kowalczyk
and
Adam Majchrowicz
were disqualified from a match they were leading in when an errant ball struck
Rameez Junaid
in the head at the conclusion of this point (see above) on Thursday at the Napoli Challenger.
Kowalczyk and Majchrowicz were leading 6-3, 4-4 at the time of the incident.
It appears that there were two ways to call this unfortunate incident, and the umpire chose to disqualify Kowalczyk and Majchrowicz even though the ball was struck inadvertently, before the out call, and Junaid really should have been watching on the play.
The other option would have been to default Skupski and Junaid due to injury.
After a fault call on the second-serve Skupski’s return comes back at the server and he whacks it out of the air. It sails right into the head of Junaid and lays him out. Eventually he made it to his chair before the match was called.
Junaid and Skupski would move on to the semifinals, where they lost, 6-0, 3-6, 10-8 to
Gero Kretschmer
and
Alexander Satschko
.
Did the umpire make the right call? Let us know in the comments.
