After much thought, John Isner will not compete at the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio this summer.
The top ranked American instead will focus on summer hard court events including the BB&T Atlanta Open where he is defending champion.

“It’s a decision I didn’t take lightly,” Isner said during a promotional event in Atlanta per the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
Isner competed in the London Olympics back in 2012 where he lost in the quarterfinals to Roger Federer. Isner’s decision was based on the fact that this year’s Atlanta event will be held a week before Rio.
Isner, a three-time defending champion, will seek to become the first active American player to win an ATP event four times.
Another factor is that players competing in Rio will not receive any ranking points based on their results. The London Games did allocate points for players.
Isner added that not playing the Olympics is not about money or points, but so that he can rest and focus on the North American hard court swing leading up to the US Open.
Players choosing not to compete in the Olympics is nothing new.
Andy Roddick skipped the Summer Games in 2008. Mardy Fish, who won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens games, chose not compete in 2012.
Four American players, based on their current rankings prior to Rio, will be chosen to represent the U.S at the Summer Games.
