Federer Gets Street Named After Him in Switzerland

Aspiring tennis players in Switzerland can now walk to their national tennis center on a street named for one of their country’s all-time greats.

ATP: Nadal Moves into Barcelona Quarters

Roger Federer visited Biel, Switzerland on Thursday where he trained as a junior. He attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony where he inaugurated the street that leads up to the national tennis center. The street will now be known as “1 Allee Roger Federer”.

“I am very moved. I never thought I would see a street named after me,” Federer said at the event per swissinfo.ch. “I hope that we will see future champions on the Allée Roger Federer. Thanks a million.”

The idea to rename the street started in 2010 as a way to connect the 17-time Grand Slam champion with his roots at the tennis center as a junior.

1,500 people attended the event and Federer signed autographs afterwards.

"For Roger Federer, it is a journey through time," Mayor Erich Fehr said.

Federer also symbolically launched construction of an extension of the tennis center that is scheduled to open next year.
