Bencic to Miss a Month with Back Injury

Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic will miss this weekend’s Fed Cup semifinal with the Czech Republic, and a good chunk of the clay-court season as well, while resting to heal a back injury that has lingered this season.

"The injury, a small scar of the periosteum at the coccyx is not serious, but needs some time to heal completely," Bencic's father and coach Ivan told the Swiss Tennis Federation.

The report says Bencic will need to rest for four weeks.

The World No. 10’s absence leaves a big hole in Switzlerland’s roster for this weekend’s tie in Lucerne. But the Czechs have their issues as well. Both Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova have opted to skip the tie in order to rest.

The Swiss are through to the last four at Fed Cup for the first time since 1998, while the Czechs have reached the last four of the International competition for an eighth consecutive year. The Czechs have won the title in four of the last five seasons.

Bencic started the season strongly but has since slipped, likely because of the injury. She has dropped six of her last seven and is 13-9 on the season. The 19-year-old reached the Top 10 for the first time after reaching the St. Petersburg final in February.
