This One Goes to 11: Fritz Defeats Jodar for First Title of ’26

He dropped on his back and soaked in the moment, relishing a title run that featured a match point saved and a 24-hour wait to play a final that was delayed by persistent rain and thunderstorms in DC on Sunday.

Taylor Fritz claimed his first title of 2026 – and 11th overall – with a 7-6(2) victory over Spain’s Rafael Jodar on Monday, the Southern Californian returning to his position as the top-ranked American man with a statement of intent.

The victory marks Fritz’s biggest title on tour since 2022. He had lost his first three finals of 2026.

“I’ve given this speech a lot of times recently, but not as the winner, so it’s really nice to actually mean it a little bit more this time,” he said as he addressed his team during the trophy ceremony. “Thank you so much for everything you guys do, just staying on top of me all the time.”

Fritz becomes tghe fourth American man to win the D.C. title this century, a list that also includes Andy Roddick, James Blake, Sebastian Korda.

The 28-year-old needed one hour and 49 minutes to get past the 19-year-old from Madrid. He was broken just once in the contest, and that break occurred after he had raced out to a double break 3-0 lead in set two.

Despite the loss, Jodar will rise to No.15 in this week’s ATP rankings and make his Top 20 debut. He started the season ranked at No.165.

Fritz had big words of praise for the rising talent who is playing his first full season on the tour.

“You’re having an amazing season at 19, first year on tour, just you and your dad,” Fritz said. “What you guys are doing is incredible. You’re so young, and you’re only gonna get so much better.

“I’m only gonna get older, so thank you for letting me get this one today. It’s incredible, incredible what you’re doing this year.”
