Tiafoe Battles From the Brink, Stays Alive In Wide Open Roland Garros Draw
Opportunity knocks in the men’s singles draw at Roland-Garros and Frances Tiafoe doesn’t want to be left out of the party. The No.19-seeded American had his back against the wall on Saturday evening but found a way through against Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria, 4-6, 6-7(2) 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-2 to set a round of 16 clash with Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.

Tiafoe has had a checkered past at the Parisian Slam, but not in the last two years. He started his Roland-Garros career with five consecutive losses, and was 4-8 overall heading into 2025. Since then he has won seven of eight.
“I am trying to have the mentality of never laying down,” Tiafoe said in his post match press. “If he gets you and earns it, great. Don’t help him over the finish line and that’s my mentality. I just wanted to see if he could put me away and he couldn’t.”
Tiafoe has won back-to-back five-setters and completed his second career comeback from two sets to love down on Saturday.
He has played over 11 hours through three rounds, but his round of 16 opponent, Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi, has played 12:16.
Tiafoe is in the top half of the draw that was recently vacated by Jannik Sinner. He’s the highest-seeded player in the cluster of four players that will emerge as a semifinalist. If he can get past Arnaldi he would face the winner of the Matteo Berrettini vs Juan Manuel Cerundolo match.
“It’s fun to be a part of,” Tiafoe said of the draw. “Whether you get it done you are part of history.
“It’s pretty cool to see guys put it on the line, just absolutely giving it all you got, that’s the best thing about sports.”
