Lorenzo Musetti Withdraws from Roland Garros

Lorenzo Musetti’s Roland Garros dreams are dusted for this season.

The 2025 Roland Garros semifinalist Musetti withdrew from Roland Garros today due to a left leg injury. Musetti was hobbling visibly in the second set of his 6-3, 6-1 Rome round of 16 loss to Casper Ruud.

Musetti joins two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune and Jack Draper among the notable men who have pulled out of Paris nursing injuries.

It’s a deeply disappointing turn of events for Musetti, who led Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 1-3 in the Australian Open quarterfinals when a psoas muscle injury forced him to pull the plug on a match he seemed destined to win.

Since that Australian Open retirement, Musetti has posted a 6-5 record and will now miss his favorite Grand Slam.

“After yesterday’s match, I had medical tests that revealed a quadriceps injury, requiring several weeks of rest and recovery,” Musetti posted on his Instagram account. “Unfortunately, this means that I will not be able to participate in the Hamburg and Roland-Garros tournaments, which is extremely difficult news to accept.

“A huge thank you to the fans in Rome for their incredible support: that’s exactly why, even though I wasn’t 100%, I chose to come on the court and give it my all for my home tournament.“

The 10th-ranked Italian possesses the racquet skills to challenge even elite opponents, however durability continues to be an issue. In the 2025 Roland Garros semifinals, Musetti won the first set vs. Alcaraz but ultimately retired trailing 6-4, 6-7(3), 0-6, 0-2.

The former world No. 5 did not offer a date for his planned return to the Tour.

In a preseason interview with Tennis Now in December, Musetti said he was working on improving his strength and applying his all-court acumen to hard courts.

“We are really working hard to adapt my game. I don’t want to say a “hard court specialist”, but in a more aggressive style, so I think it will really fit well in Australia,” Musetti told Tennis Now in December. “So hopefully I can start with a really aggressive, you know, tennis that can really open up all the opportunities.”
