Noskova Levels Czechia with Switzerland in BJK Cup Qualifier

International team play inspired some superb individual efforts in Billie Jean King Cup competition.

Linda Noskova swept Swiss Viktorija Golubic 6-1, 6-4 to level Czechia with host Switzerland in this week’s Billie Jean King Cup Qualifier on the hard court of the Swiss Tennis Arena in Biel, Switzerland today.

Earlier, former Olympic gold-medal champion Belinda Bencic beat Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, staking Switzerland to a 1-0 lead.

Over the course of today and tomorrow, 14 nations will play in seven best-of-five-match home-and-away ties to determine who books a spot in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China in September.

Match 1: Mika Stojsavljevic (GBR) d. Talia Gibson (AUS) 7-6(4), 7-5
Match 2: Harriet Dart (GBR) d. Kimberly Birrell (AUS) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

Harriet Dart rallied from a set down scoring nine breaks of serve to beat Kimberly Birrell in two hours, 25 minutes.

Switzerland 1, Czechia 1
at Swiss Tennis Arena, Biel, Switzerland on indoor hard court

Match 1: Belinda Bencic (SUI) d. Marie Bouzkova (CZE) 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4
Match 2: Linda Noskova (CZE) d. Viktorija Golubic (SUI) 6-1, 6-4

Former Olympic gold medal champion Belinda Bencic shared she had to “fight for her life” outlasting Marie Bouzkova in the three-hour opening match to stake the Swiss to the early lead.

Kazakhstan 1, Canada 1
at Beeline Arena, Astana, Kazakhstan on indoor clay

Match 1: Yulia Putintseva (KAZ) d. Kayla Cross (CAN) 6-3, 7-5
Match 2: Bianca Andreescu (CAN) d. Sonja Zhiyenbayeva (KAZ) 6-4, 7-6(6)

The 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu made a triumphant return to Billie Jean King Cup play keeping Canada’s hopes alive.

Italy 2, Japan 0
at ASD Colle degli Dei, Velletri, Italy on outdoor clay

Match 1: Elisabetta Cocciaretto (ITA) d. Moyuka Uchijima (JPN) 7-5, 6-2
Match 2: Jasmine Paolini (ITA) d. Himeno Sakatsume (JPN) 6-3, 6-1

Former French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini dropped just four games moving Italy to within one match win of taking the tie.

Ukraine 2, Poland 0
at PreZero Arena, Gliwice, Poland on indoor clay

Match 1: Marta Kostyuk (UKR) d. Magda Linette 6-4, 6-0
Match 2: Elina Svitolina (UKR) d. Katarzyna Kawa (POL) 6-2, 6-1

World No. 7 Elina Svitolina needed just 52 minutes to stake Ukraine to a strong 2-0 lead.
