Sinner Tops Borges in Straight Sets to Reach Wimbledon’s Third Round

Jannik Sinner had an easier go of things on Wednesday at Wimbledon. Two days after struggling through a wild, bloody five-setter with Miomir Kecmanovic, the top-seeded Italian eased past Portugal’s Nuno Borges, 7-6(4) 7-6(2) 6-4.

With the win, Sinner passes Nicolas Pietrangeli for first place on the all-time Grand Slam men’s singles match win list for Italian men with 95 (22 loses).

Most importantly, the four-time Grand Slam champion said he felt fine after enduring a dangerous fall and a bloodied right foot during his first-round win.

“For sure when you have a fall like this, woke up the next day,” he said. “It was not perfect. We recovered very well. On court today I felt good. So no issues at all. The foot was really good.”

The serve was good as well.

Sinner fired 22 aces, to go with the 31 he struck in the first round. He won 82 percent of his first serve points, but did surrender two service breaks.

Borges was broken three times, as Sinner won 20 of 31 second-serve return points.

The Italian will face American Jenson Brooksby in the third round.

Brooksby, a Sacramento, California native, has moved into round three without dropping a set. He took out Ignacio Buse, 6-2 6-2 6-3.
