Hamburg Native Korpatsch Defeats Bondar for Second Career Title

Hamburg native and resident Tamara Korpatsch claimed her second career title on Sunday, defeating Anna Bondar 6-3, 6-3 in the Hamburg Ladies Open final for her first tour triumph in three years. 

Korpatch, 31, will rise to a career-high ranking of No.45 in Monday’s WTA rankings. 

Bondar, bidding for her first career title and playing for the title for the second consecutive year in Hamburg, rallied from 4-1 to 4-3 down to get back on serve in the first, but it was fifth-seeded Korpatsch’s turn to step up. The German took the final two games to clinch the opening set. 

She ripped a forehand with Bondar serving at 3-4, 30-30 and took the next point to brek for 5-3. 

Three minutes later she had wrapped up the opening set with a love hold against the fourth seed. 

Korpatch made the critical break for 3-2 in the second set, as Bondar helped her along by misfiring on the forehand from the midcourt. 

The home favorite broke again for good measure in the final game, clinching her first championship point with a lob that eluded Bondar and landed just inside the baseline with one hour and 27 minutes on the match clock.

Korpatsch finished the final with 20 winners against 11 unforced errors. She broke serve four times from seven opportunities and was only broken once.
