Mexico has been good to Canada’s Leylah Fernandez. Last year in Acapulco, Fernandez was just 17 when she reached her first career final. This week in Monterrey the teen sensation took it a step further by claiming her maiden WTA title with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic.
Fernandez, whose self-confessed goal is to reach the Top 10 by the end of the season, took a big step in the right direction this week. She will rise to a projected 69 in the ranking from 88 after plowing through the draw without the loss of a set.

The Canadian raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set before the 28-year-old Swiss was able to get on the board.
The second set was much closer as the Golubic lead by 4-3 on serve, after an early trade of breaks, but Fernandez was able to rally and sweep through the final three games to clinch her victory in 89 minutes.
Fernandez was the youngest player to enter the main draw, and one of two teenagers.
Golubic, who qualified, has reach two WTA finals this year, and another two on the ITF circuit. Her record across all levels stands at 23-5 after today’s loss.
