Today, the defending champion ran into a wall of sound and a spirited French opponent. Muguruza left feeling bitter about the experience and even wagged a finger at the Lenglen crowd to let them know she wasn't cool with their treatment of her.

Muguruza, who broke down in tears during her post-match press conference (see video above), returned composed and said she felt French fans were "disrespectful of my game." But before that she threw a little shade Mladenovic's way. When asked by a reporter if she found it difficult to hear the Frenchwoman exhorting herself by using he Italian phrase "Forza," Muguruza quipped. "I think she speaks like 25 languages, I heard, so…" Muguruza's comments alluded to the back-and-forth between Mladenovic and Sara Errani that occurred earlier this week after the Italian became annoyed by the same thing after her second-round loss to Mladenovic. Errani later put the controversy to bed by apologizing. "I think the crowd today was a little bit obviously tough for me," Muguruza said after the match. "I just think that they were a little bit, sometimes should be a little bit more respectful. … I know she's a French player, and I understand that. I went prepared out there.
