Agent: Questionable Federer Will Play Three More Years

2020 could be Roger Federer‘s final full season on the pro circuit.Tony Godsick, Federer’s agent, said while the 20-time Grand Slam champion has not set a definitive retirement date, it’s “really questionable” whether Federer will play beyond the 2020 season.More: Halep Has Herniated DiscGodsick told the Swiss publication Blick Federer’s future is one reason why Geneva will host the 2019 Laver Cup—because the 37-year-old Swiss’ competitive future is uncertain beyond 2020.“By 2020, the Laver Cup will again be held outside Europe,” Godsick told Blick. “Whether Roger will continue playing for another three years is really questionable.“He does not know when he [will] stop [playing]. For me it is sometimes frustrating because I am an organized person and I like to plan in advance. Roger assured me that he will play the Laver Cup in Geneva.”Federer signed a new apparel contract with Japanese brand Uniqlo before Wimbledon. The deal is reportedly worth $300 million. Federer was earning about $7.5 million annually with Nike. His Uniqlo deal will reportedly nearly quadruple that total annually.Aside from a major financial boost, Federer is hugely popular in Asia and will be a major draw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, assuming he plays after missing the Rio Olympics two years ago.The Australian Open champion has said competing in the 2020 Olympics was not discussed during his negotiations with Uniqlo.Agent Godsick says he hopes the three iconic champions—Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic—will all play the 2019 Laver Cup in Geneva.“That’s our goal,” Godsick said. “I think we will have an all-star team in Geneva. “These include fire and ice captains John McEnroe and Bjorg Borg.
