(July 6, 2011) World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark retired because of a shoulder injury while she was leading 73rd-ranked Sofia Arvidsson 6-2, 0-1 in their second-round match at the Swedish Open Wednesday.
Before she retired, Wozniacki was having a difficult time holding serve. She won 52 percent of her service points in the match and was broken twice, but she broke three times to win the set.
It was a similar story to her first-round match against Frenchwoman Alize Cornet. She was broken seven times in that match, but she edged her by breaking nine times.
It’s an unfortunate outcome for the Dane, who won the equivalent event in Stockholm in 2008, and then advanced to the final in 2009.
At the WTA’s other clay court tournament in Budapest, Klara Zakopalova defeated Aleksandra Krunic 7-5, 7-5 and Irina-Camelia Begu beat Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-4.
