In a case of the underdog versus the top player, Victoria Azarenka will attempt to boost herself in the points system at Doha. Taking on ranked No.2 Vera Zvonareva, Azarenka has yet to reach a Grand Slam Final, however with successes like earning her second title in Moscow only a week ago on her side, she’s no competitor to overlook. Even if Azarenka takes this game, it won’t be an easy battle for the No.10 player. There is no doubt that Vera Zvonereva is currently one of the best players in the sport, however, after putting away an ailing Jelena Jankovic, the test of whether she can truly shut out an opponent is still up for debate.

After these two,
Kim Clijsters will take on Jelena Jankovic. Having won 39 WTA singles titles since turning pro in 1997, Clijsters is one of the top competitors in this competition. Coming back from injury, where she has a mole removed from the sole of her foot which later became infected, Clijsters is still riding the victory of her second US Open win this past August. With all of her success, one would assume Clijsters would have nothing to prove but after dropping out of the China Open, one can only hope she will remember that, although her competition has had a lackluster performance in the past few weeks, Jankovic is still a former No.1. Suffering from illness recently, the Jelena Jankovic of today seems to pale in comparison to her former self. After her lose to Vera Zevonareva yesterday, Jankovic was forced to request an IV drip due to a lingering virus that has pushed her out within the second round of the last two tournaments she’s participated in.

Fans can look forward to seeing World Ranked No.1 Caroline Wozniacki playing against No.5 Samantha Stosur. It’s no secret that Wozniacki has been at the top of her game since beating out Serena Williams for the top spot. Proving time and time again that she possess the mental capacity and power that it takes to become a legend of the sport. This doesn’t mean that fans should discount her competition, having won the pair’s last meeting in Osaka in 2009, Stosur possesses the power needed to go far within this competition.
