(September 18, 2011) Rafael Nadal sealed the win needed to put Spain into the Davis Cup finals in the fourth-singles rubber against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Spain will now face finalists, Argentina.
Nadal took two hours, 17 minute at 6-0, 6-2, 6-4. The top Spaniard hit less aces at zero to Tsonga’s 7 and less winners at 21 to the Frenchman’s 36, however, Nadal won 99 of 153 points available.
He managed to break the World No. 10 at six of 17 attempts while never giving Tsonga a chance at his serve. Tsonga’s game also suffered with 50 unforced errors to only Nadal’s eight.
Only playing two sets, Verdasco played the fifth-dead rubber where he defeated Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-1 and this set Spain at 4-1.
Spain won the all of the singles matches but lost the doubles on Saturday.
The finals against Argentina will be played on December 2nd- 4th.
Nadal and his team remain confident telling the Associated Press, "Thanks to the excellent relations inside the team, the Spanish players have stayed united over the years to keep winning.”
