(March 10, 2011) -- Fresh off the heels of an inspiring victory over Novak Djokovic in Dubai, you would think that Andy Murray’s confidence would have been sky high coming into Indian Wells.
But after Murray’s dismal performance against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Saturday evening, a 6-4, 6-2 loss that featured an uncharacteristically high number of unforced errors and missed opportunities from the Scot, all Murray can do is try to pick of the pieces and hope for some sort of redemption in Miami.
"My return let me down, and he hardly missed the ball, either,” said Murray after the match.
More importantly, Murray missed more than his share.
Murray failed to convert on a break point in the second game of the match when he netted a forehand, then missed a crucial chance to pull ahead of the Spaniard in the sixth game when he lost five straight points after holding triple break point.
In the ninth game of the set, a missed smash gave world No. 92 Garcia-Lopez a chance to break and he did not miss.
Many will make this out to be an epic failure on the part of Murray but the truth is that Garcia-Lopez played some scintillating tennis throughout, hardly missing the court and keeping Murray off balance with aggressive groundstrokes from both sides.
The Spaniard served out the set to love and continued to roll, breaking Murray in the first game of the second set.
To his credit, Murray never stopped trying to find his form. He saved multiple break points to stay within a game at 2-1, then looked ready to draw even when he earned another triple break point against Garcia-Lopez’s serve in the fourth game. But that opportunity went down the drain when Murray netted another forehand on his last of three opportunities to draw even.
All told, Murray missed on each of his seven chances to break. He didn’t get another chance, and Garcia-Lopez, a former world No. 23 as recently as last year, made some splendid shots of his own to break Murray a third time, then close out the upset in style.
"It's one of the biggest wins in my career," Garcia-Lopez declared to BNPParibasOpen.com. "This victory gives me some confidence that I can do better this season."
