Tommy Robredo upset the 16th-ranked American, Mardy Fish, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. After coming back from a humiliating first round, Robredo came back to win three straight sets, elevating the 52nd-ranked Spaniard as he climbs to the next round. What promised to be a good year for the new and improved Mardy Fish is certainly starting off poorly.
Tomas Berdych has beaten Phillip Kohlschreiber in 4 sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. After what seemed to be a daunting first set, Berdych came back to win set and move on to the next round.
Andy Roddick took on the 99th-ranked Igor Kunitsyn, beating him in the famed Rod Laver Arena, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3. The 8th-ranked American is the highest ranked American competing in the tournament. With this, Roddick makes his way to the next round of the Australian Open, hoping to come back to the fame which he once had.
Janko Tipsarevic took on 9th-ranked Fernando Verdasco in Hisenese Arena, where Verdasco is winning in the 5th set 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 1-0. While Tipsarevic played well initially, it was really Verdasco who took control of the game in the 4th set, winning several break points even after missing on several early cross-court forehands that one would expect him to make in his sleep. The 49th-ranked Serbian looked to be creating quite the stir during this open, but Verdasco's pace appears to be the real champion here.
