Julia Goerges shocked the women’s tennis world as she beat out No. 1 ranked Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, to claim the singles title in Stuttgart, Germany at the Porsche Tennis Open.
Goerges is currently ranked at a career high of 29, and is having a start to a great tennis year – playing in the Fed Cup for Germany, making it to the quarter finals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina and finally beating Wozniacki here, in her own country.
On the court she faltered little, taking the first set in a tiebreak and dominating in the second set against the weak-looking Danish rival.
In doubles, Samantha Stosur and Sabine Lisicki beat out Kristina Barrois and Jasmine Woehr, 6-1, 7-6(5). Stosur was at one point in time ranked No. 1 in doubles, but has since fallen to No. 82. The team dominated the first set and was able to come out the victor in the second, despite some minor faults.
