It wasn't as big a deal to the American crowd as Donald Young's triumph over Andy Murray, but Ivo Karlovic gave the crowd at Indian Wells a big win to match his big serve on Saturday. Karlovic shocked No. 6 David Ferrer 7-6(3), 6-3) to advance to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open.
A week after setting a new world record for fastest serve, Croatia's Karlovic notched nine aces and was successful on 86 percent (36 of 42) first serves in taking out the Australian Open semifinalist in straight sets.
The win broke Karlovic's eight-match losing streak against top 10 opponents, and sent the No. 239 player in the world into the third round. Meanwhile, another tall drink of water was proving his place in the third round.
Juan Martin Del Potro ousted defending champion Ivan Ljubicic in comeback fashion, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Del Potro saved four of five break points, and converted 23 of his final 28 first serves to eliminate the 14th-seeded Ljubicic.
The victory pushes Del Potro into a third-round matchup against the Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov, who ousted Victor Hanescu, 6-4, 6-4. The 20th-seeded Dolgopolov notched seven aces and broke Hanescu three times to take the win in 73 minutes.
Also upset in his first match of the tournament was 19th-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, who was stunned by Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman, 7-5, 6-0. Devvarman came into the tournament ranked 84th in the world.
In the early evening session, American Sam Querrey defeated Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-4, just his fourth win of the season against five losses. Querrey will take on Fernando Verdasco in the third round.
