Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard was happy to have reached her first career Grand Slam final at Wimbledon this year, but her 6-0, 6-3 loss to Petra Kvitova in Saturday’s final left her with a bit of a sour taste about leaving as runner-up.
Rapid Reaction: Kvitova Overpowers Bouchard for 2nd Wimbledon Title
Bouchard, who was bidding to win the Ladies Singles title just two years after claiming the junior title in 2012, said that today’s experiences pales in comparison to her junior title.
Asked in her post-match press conference if she still felt that the junior title was the best moment of her career, or if reaching her first Wimbledon final has surpassed that, Bouchard said she’d prefer to walk out a winner.
“That’s a tough question,” Bouchard said, “but I still think my junior title is better than this. I think winning a tournament without losing a match is always something special.”
Per the WTA, the quickest turnaround for Wimbledon junior to senior success belongs to Martina Hingis, who won the girls crown in 1994 and then took the Wimbledon women’s singles title in 1997.
“That was a big moment for me,” Bouchard said of her 2012 juniors title. “I’m definitely proud of myself for these last two weeks and this whole year. I think it [reaching the finals] comes close.”
But there is still plenty of consolation for the 20-year-old. Bouchard has become Canada’s first Grand Slam finalist and she will enter the WTA’s top ten for the first time on Monday when new rankings are released. She will make her top ten debut at No. 7 in the world, one spot higher than the previous high for a Canadian, which was achieved by Carling Bassett-Seguso.
Bouchard reached the Wimbledon final on her sixth career appearance at a major—only five players have done it faster (Pam Shriver, Venus Williams, Chris Evert, Natalie Zvereva and Monica Seles).
