Richard Gasquet’s fabled career will not officially come to an end until Roland-Garros this spring. But the 38-year-old Frenchman saw his legendary tenure at Montpellier close on Thursday evening as he fell to Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

A three-time champion who once reached six consecutive finals at Montpellier, Gasquet was sent off by the home faithful in a moving ceremony that featured his father as well as Sebastian Grosjean on court.
In Montpellier, it has not gone unnoticed that Gasquet is the all-time leader in appearances (13), match wins (29) and titles (3, tied with Monfils). Unfortunately for Gasquet, he was up against al player who thrives on indoor hard courts – Greikspoor is second to Jannik Sinner in indoor wins (25) since the start of 2023.
Still, Griekspoor had to save eight of nine break points, and all six that he faced in the final set, to notch the win in two hours and seven minutes.
“I don’t know how I got away with it,” Griekspoor told the crowd before giving the stage to Gasquet for his ceremony, which featured a moving video montage of some of his great moments at the event.
“First of all, big applause for Richard,” Griekspoor said of the former World No.7. “Unbelievable career, achieved so much. If I can achieve a little bit of what he’s achieved in his career, I’d absolutely sign for it.”
