Winning is a habit for Taylor Fritz. The first American to reach a Grand Slam final since 2009 and the first to do so at the US Open since 2006, also became the first American to reach the semifinals at Madrid since the event switched to clay in 2009 last year.
On Sunday he cracked another milestone, earning his 300th ATP win when Benjamin Bonzi retired at 4-6 7-5.
Fritz is the first active American man to reach 300 wins and the 39th overall.
He will face either Sebastian Korda or Casper Ruud in the round of 16.
When asked what his three biggest wins were, Fritz said his first title in Eastbourne, the US Open semifinal victory over Frances Tiafoe that propelled him to his maiden major final, and his victory over Rafael Nadal in the Indian Wells final in 2022.
In other third-round action on Sunday in Madrid, ninth-seeded Daniil Medvedev defeated Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 6-2, while Brandon Nakashima took out Flavio Cobolli 7-5, 6-3.
Alexander Bublik took out Andrey Rublev, 6-4 0-6 6-4, which means that Rublev will drop out of the ATP’s Top 15 next week for the first time since January of 2020. Top-seeded Alexander Zverev edged Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 2-6 7-6(3) 7-6.
