Adrian Mannarino snapped a seven-match losing streak at the Masters 1000s and ended Tommy Paul's hopes of climbing into contention for this year’s ATP Finals on Monday in Bercy.
The crafty Frenchman played inspired tennis from start to finish as he handed the 11th-seeded American a 6-3, 7-5 setback that eliminated him from joining this year’s elite eight at Turin.
36-year-old Mannarino rode the energy of the boisterous crowd at Accor Arena in Paris, as he converted five of 11 break points and stayed in front of Paul for most of the match.
Paul wedged his way back into the match late in the set when he broke Mannarino as he served for the match at 5-3 in the second set, but he was broken in the next game, as Mannarino clinched his electrifying win in one hour and 42 minutes and send the faithful into a Frenzy.
It’s the type of effort that Mannarino has been unable to produce this season. After winning 43 matches in 2023, he has slumped and entered Monday’s match with a spotty 13-29 overall record.
Paul, meanwhile, finishes his season at 45-18 with three titles. The 27-year-old was in blossom mode for much of the season, winning titles at Dallas, Queen’s Club and Stockholm, and reaching Masters 1000 semifinals at Indian Wells and Rome.
Tsitsipas Stays In the Hunt
In other action on Monday in Bercy, Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to keep his hopes of reaching the ATP Finals alive. The Greek notched his 100th Masters 1000 win. He entered the week in 12th in the Race to Turin standings.
The Greek is still far behind the field and will need to win the title in Paris to qualify.
Ugo Humbert defeated American Brandon Nakashima, while Francisco Cerundolo topped Frenchman Quentin Halys.
After winning the opening set, Czech Tomas Machac retired with a leg injury in the second set against Arthur Rinderknech.
Tallon Griekspoor, Alejandro Tabilo, Jordan Thompson, Marcos Giron, Nicolas Jarry, Alexander Bublik, Miomir Kecmanovic and Tomas Martin Etcheverry also advanced.
No.2 seed Carlos Alcaraz will take the court tomorrow, against Jarry in the night session. See the full Day 2 schedule below:
