Bianca Andreescu, 2019 champion, was hoping for a heroic homecoming in Toronto. Instead, she suffered a disappointing defeat.

The 2019 US Open champion started fast but was ultimately defeated by Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, 0-6 6-3 6-4, in a turnaround result that left Andreescu reeling.



Asked how she will remember her trip to her hometown tournament she said: “Right now all I can really think about is how shitty I feel.

“Oviously I don't want to be discouraged, but it's just so hard when you're playing literally, for me, that was the best tennis I've ever played in my life, and then for a match to just turn around like that, it sucks. I don't want to be too down on myself. I'm going to give myself today and that's it. Tomorrow I just have to regroup.”



Andreescu took the first set in 20 minutes, and even took an early break in the second, but things would soon unravel.

Tsurenko, who improved to 3-0 lifetime against Andreescu, flipped the script by taking the middle set then reeling off the first five games of the decider. Andreescu captured four games but her fightback would prove to be too much too little too late.

In other action on Tuesday in Toronto 10th-seeded Anna Kalinskaya defeated Louisa Chirico 6-2, 6-3, No.11-seeded Marta Kostyuk crushed Tatjana Maria, 6-0, 6-2, and No.12-seeded Victoria Azarenka took out Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-2.

2017 champion Elina Svitolina was also a winner, as she sailed by American Shelby Rogers 6-0, 6-2.

Taylor Townsend (d. Yastremska), Karolina Pliskova (d. Podoroska), Yafan Wang (d. Kenin), Magdalena Frech (d. Potapova) and Moyuka Muchijima (d. Tomova) also advanced.
