You can’t stop her, you can only hope to contain her.
Danielle Collins – she of the Miami fairy tale – continued her run of breathtaking tennis on Thursday at the Credit One Open in Charleston, defeating two former champions to reach the quarterfinals and stretch her current winning streak to ten.
Collins topped No.2 seed Ons Jabeur 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to begin the day on Thursday before kicking off the night session with a 6-2, 6-2 cruise past fellow American Sloane Stephens.
“I should be able to take this and use it as confidence moving forward,” said Collins.
Ya think?
Collins, already up to 20 in the live rankings (from 53 prior to Miami), will face 11th-seeded Belgian Elise Mertens on Friday. She was lights-out last week in Miami as she surged to her biggest career title and earned her second career Top-5 win in the final against Elena Rybakina.
Top-seeded Jessica Pegula defeated Poland’s Magda Linette 6-2 6-2 to set a quarterfinal with 12th-seeded Victoria Azarenka, who toppled Taylor Townsend, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.
Daria Kasatkina, seeded fourth, will face unseeded Jaqueline Cristian after the Romanian took out 10th-seeded American Emma Navarro, while resurgent Maria Sakkari will face 2021 champion Veronika Kudermetova.
