Dominic Thiem has reached his 76th career quarterfinal in Astana, thanks to a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2) victory over American Marcos Giron.
The 2020 US Open champion, who defeated Juan Pablo Varillas in the first round, has won both of his tiebreak this week in Kazakhstan.
"I played a very good tie-break. This was the best part of the match,” he said.
Two of Thiem’s 17 titles have come indoors, but he hasn’t triumphed at an indoor tournament since his memorable 2019 title in Vienna.
The 30-year-old Austrian, ranked 81, improved to 16-19 on the season as he looks ahead to facing compatriot Sebastian Ofner next.
Ofner, who got by Alexander Bublik, 6-4, 6-2, is 0-3 lifetime against Thiem.
The quarterfinals are set in Astana, with top-seeded Tallon Griekspoor and fourth-seeded Jiri Lehecka still holding it down in a tough top half of the draw.
