The 22-year-old Russian notched her fourth Top-10 victory of 2023 with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over the top-seeded Tunisian on Wednesday at the Cymbiotika San Diego Open to set a clash with American Sofia Kenin.

The 27th-ranked Russian, who had lost her only previous meeting to Jabeur, came through a back-and-forth opening set that featured two trades of breaks. She clipped the last break of the set in the tenth game to take the lead.

Potapova converted six of 11 break points overall, including all three she saw in the second set.

Jabeur served for the second set twice, at 5-4 and 6-5, before falling in a tiebreak.

The Tunisian, who was ill at the US Open and lost in the round of 16 to Zheng Qinwen, falls to 27-13 on the season.

Potapova lost in the first round to Clara Tauson at the US Open. She improves to 28-16 on the season.

The quarterfinals are set at San Diego, featuring three Americans and four seeds. No.2-seeded Caroline Garcia defeated Sloane Stephens on Wednesday, while No.3-seeded Maria Sakkari advanced when Camila Osorio retired down 6-3, 2-2.
