Join us for a rundown of the first two rounds at the China Open, by the numbers.

– World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka is playing in her first tournament as the WTA’s top-ranked player and it is so far, so good for the Belarusian, who has defeated Sofia Kenin (6-1, 6-2) and Katie Boulter (7-5, 7-6(2) to reach the round of 16.

– Number of Polish women into the round of 16 at Beijing. It’s the first time in history that two women from Poland have reached the round of 16, but only one can make the quarterfinals as No.2-seeded Iga Swiatek meets Magda Linette on Wednesday.

– Number of games dropped by 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva in her second-round takedown of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Andreeva will face Elena Rybakina next.

– Swiatek and Coco Gauff currently lead the WTA Tour in singles titles with four in 2023. Both are still alive and driving for five in Beijing.

– Number of players that have qualified for this year’s WTA Finals in Cancun – Sabalanka, Swiatek, Rybakina, Gauff, Pegula. The next three players in the race – Vondrousova, Muchova and Jabeur – are all out, which means that Maria Sakkari (currently nine) has a chance to make up ground.

– Each of the top six seeds – Sabalenka, Swiatek, Gauff, Pegula, Rybakina and Sakkari – are through to the round of 16.

– Seventh-seeded Ons Jabeur, who fell to Marta Kostyuk in the round of 16, is the highest seed to fall so far.

– Number of games dropped by Elena Rybakina through wins over Zheng Qinwen (6-1, 6-2) and Tatjana Maria (7-5, 6-0).

– Number of seeded players that reached the round of 16, with seven unseeded.

– Gauff improved to 10-5 in three-set matches with her 7-5, 5-7, 7-6(2) win over Petra Martic on Tuesday.

– Number of losses taken by Iga Swiatek in 2023. The Pole is 59-11 (59 wins leads the WTA Tour) after Tuesday’s win over Varvara Gracheva – she was 67-9 in 2022.

–  Number of losses suffered by Elena Rybakina in 2023. The Kazakh was 40-21 in 2022.

– No.13-seeded Jelena Ostapenko received the only walkover of the tournament to reach the round of 16, when Linda Noskova was forced to pull out. Ostapenko will face Jessica Pegula in the round of 16.

– Number of consecutive wins notched by 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff, who has not lost since Montreal.

– Difference in age between Mirra Andreeva and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in their second-round tussle on Tuesday. The 16-year-old Russian dominated her compatriot, notching a 6-2, 6-1 victory in 63 minutes.

– The age of Mirra Andreeva, who became the youngest player to ever win a China Open match with her first-round win over Barbora Krejcikova. She is the youngest player remaining in the draw, and the only teen.
