World No.7 Taylor Fritz powered into the semifinals at the Delray Beach Open on Friday with a 7-6(8), 6-4 victory over France’s Adrian Mannarino.

Fritz, who will face compatriot Mackenzie Mcdonald for a spot in the final on Saturday, had to work extremely hard to get through a physical battle with the tricky 34-year-old southpaw.

“Slow conditions out here so I knew it was never going to be easy – I was gonna have to work for a lot of points,” Fritz said, adding:

“I felt good. There's definitely been ups and downs in my fitness. I've had times where I can't really train so I'm not super fit but I've had a lot of time recently where I've been able to put in work and I definitely feel like I'm feeling pretty fit. Tonight obviously it was very physical, it was super humid, but I felt very good.”

Fritz hammered eight aces and won 37 of 50 first serve points but could not avoid being broken twice by Mannarino – once per set. But he rallied from a break down in the opener, and saved a set point in the tiebreak before converting his fourth set point to take the lead, 7-6(8).

In the second set Fritz build a double-break 5-2 lead but gave one of the breaks back before closing out the victory.

Fritz will be looking for revenge against McDonald on Saturday. He fell to his compatriot in the second round at Delray Beach in 2019. Fritz had won their other three meetings in challenger and future matches, all of which took place between 2015 and 2017.

McDonald edged Michael Mmoh on Friday, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in 2:10.

Earlier on Friday, Radu Albot defeated Tommy Paul 6-2 6-2, while Miomir Kecmanovic defeated Marcos Giron, 7-6(5), 6-3.
