There seems to be a theme developing for Jannik Sinner this week in Rotterdam: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
Sinner ended a four-match run of futility against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round, and afterwards called the triumph an “important victory.”
The uber talented 21-year-old will try to do the same against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final after edging hometown favorite Tallon Griekspoor 7-5 7-6(5) in Saturday’s second semifinal in Rotterdam.
Sinner, who will bid for his eighth ATP title on Sunday, has lost all four of his meetings against Medvedev, the Russian who finally seems to be on an upward trajectory again after many disappointing months on tour. Medvedev crushed Grigor Dimitrov 6-1 6-2 on Saturday, a day after taking out defending champion Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2 6-4 on Friday, which also marked the end of a nine-match losing streak against the Top-10.
Medvedev will bid for his 16th ATP title and his first since Vienna last October, which also marked the last time he took out Sinner (6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals).
It should be a terrific final, with both players hungry for a tone-setting victory early in the season, and both players displaying some of their best tennis.
