Peyton Stearns became the only person to squeeze a set off of Tatjana Maria at this year’s Copa Colsanitas in Bogata, taking the second set and forcing Sunday’s final to a decider.
But the former NCAA women’s singles champion couldn’t finish that job as Maria completed her title defence with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
Maria becomes the fourth woman to win multiple Bogota titles – she has won 12 matches in a row at the event since taking her place in the qualifying draw last year.
Maria improves to 3-0 lifetime in WTA finals.
Stearns, a first-time WTA finalist playing just her fifth tour-level event, is projected to make her Top 100 debut on Monday. The former Texas Longhorn was barely inside the Top 400 this time last year.
