Holger Rune

Holger Rune continues his ascent up the rankings with another impressive title run.

Each week, in conjunction with our friends at Tennis Express, we bring you two players – one from the WTA Tour and one from the ATP Tour – whose star shined brighter than any other.

Denmark’s Holger Rune gets the nod on the men’s side this week.

In a season that has seen Carlos Alcaraz receive the lion’s share of positive press for teenagers on the ATP Tour (deservedly, as he is the youngest No.1 in ATP history), Rune has been another beacon of light for the next gen, coming of age in a big way on tour and proving that he belongs with the big boys.

This weekend the 19-year-old proved himself yet again as he engineered a title run in Stockholm that saw him notch three successive Top-25 wins – over Cameron Norrie, Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas – en route to his second title of the season.

Rune, who made his top-100 debut just prior to the Australian Open, is now a Top-25 talent himself (how quickly they grow up!).

He rises to No.25 in this week’s WTA rankings and owns a 29-23 record on the season. What’s most impressive is that Rune is going toe-to-toe with top talents, on clay and hard courts. He’s won four of his eight matches against the Top-10 this year, with two wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas, one over Alexander Zverev, and another over Jannik Sinner.

Rune now owns an 11-3 record indoors, and he’ll look to improve that this week in Basel, where he faces Alex de Minaur in the first round.

No matter what happens between now and the end of the season, it is already clear that Rune is headed for big things in the sport. He may not be at the level of his fellow 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, but he is proving that he could be a future No.1 and Grand Slam champion himself.
