Kim Clijsters thrilled fans when she announced that her comeback was going to begin this year in Miami and Charleston, but the Belgian legend has now pulled out of those events, citing a need for more rehab.
She also threw in a surprise in a recent social media post: she had surgery on her right knee last October.
“In October, I had surgery on my right knee to repair damage sustained over my career and to reduce pain,” Clijsters wrote in a statement. “Results following surgery were good—rehab and recovery went well and I was feeling really positive.”
Clijsters said that things changed in Junuary, when she was diagnosed with Covid, however.
“I had Covid in January,” she wrote, “and while the symptoms were mild, it did disrupt my training schedule. I’ve had an intensive few weeks of training with my team. Unfortunately I am not where I need to be, especially if I want to compete with the best.”
Clijsters called the experience “disappointing and frustrating” and added that she plans to “keep pushing and see what’s possible.”
“I am going to undergo some pain management treatment for the next 3-6 weeks,” she wrote. “and then regroup with my team and see what’s next.”
