Marketa Vondrousova has put an end to Naomi Osaka’s Olympic hopes.
The Czech topped Osaka 6-1, 6-4 on Tuesday in Tokyo, sending the four-time Grand Slam champion out of the draw in round of 16 action.
Vondrousova won 20 of 23 points behind her first serve and kept Osaka off balance with a steady stream of drop shots. She saved four of five break points and benefitted from 32 unforced errors off the racquet of the Japanese star, who never really hit her stride in the contest, despite 13 winners off the forehand side.
Osaka’s struggled to win points on her second serve, dropping 16 of 24 points behind it, and she was broken five times on 11 opportunities.
Osaka fell behind 4-0 in the opening set, and produced her first hold of the match for 1-4.
The second set was much closer, but Osaka squandered a 2-0 lead and Vondrousova held firm while serving at 3-3, 15-40. She won four straight points to close out the hold and in the tenth game she converted her third match point to claim the victory and a spot in the quarterfinals.
