Camila Giorgi

Camila Giorgi continues to rack up big wins in 2021. The Italian reached her biggest final on Saturday in Montreal.

Camila Giorgi had only managed five Top-50 wins across her 2019 and 2020 seasons, but in 2021 she’s already amassed 12, after edging American Jessica Pegula 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 on Saturday at the Omnium Banque Nationale.

It's been a good year.

The Italian has been on a tear of late, notching eight wins in nine matches, including four Top-20 wins since the Olympics—over Jennifer Brady and Karolina Pliskova at Tokyo, and Elise Merteens and Petra Kvitova at Montreal—and a total of six Top-20 wins in 2021, which is more than the five she earned from 2018 to 2020.

The numbers don't lie. The 29-year-old former World No.26 is playing some of her best tennis and she will enter Sunday’s final against No.4-seeded Pliskova with more than a fighting chance, given the fact that she just took out Pliskova 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16 at the Olympics (and owns a 3-3 overall record against her).

Pliskova, who is bidding for her 17th career title, topped Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets on Saturday.

“I think it's going to be another great match,” Giorgi said on Saturday. “I am just going to focus on my game, like I do as usual, then we will see. Is going to be a good match.”

Giorgi credits hard work on the practice court with her father and coach, Sergio, for her rise.

“I think is just because we been working many things with my dad actually,” she said. “We did some changes of the game. I mean, more tactical, more strategy.”

Giorgi hit 27 winners to 14 for Pegula, and broke serve five times on ten opportunities.
