The top three seeds all moved into the semifinals on Friday at the bett1HULKS Indoors in Cologne, Germany.
Top-seeded Alexander Zverev stopped Lloyd Harris, world No. 92 from South Africa, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, while second-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut also issued a bagel decider to sixth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, coming through 7-6(4) 5-7, 6-0.
Zverev, the 2020 US Open runner-up, is into his third semifinal of the season, and his first away from the Grand Slams (he also reached the Australian Open semifinals).
Bautista Agut improves to 20-7 on the season and will face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semis.
The Spaniard will also take home hot shot of the day honors for Friday, thanks to this magnificent tweener, which whizzed past his Polish opponent for a clean winner.
Bautista Agut is playing his second semifinal of the season, after reaching the last four at Cincinnati, where he fell to Novak Djokovic.
Auger-Aliassime improved to 11-3 in his last 14 indoor matches with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 takedown of Moldova’s Radu Albot. The 20-year-old Canadian rummaged through the final nine games from 3-all in the first to claim his 20th win of 2020, against 14 losses.
The Canadian dropped just 15 points on serve and broke Albot five times on six opportunities to set his second lifetime meeting with Bautista Agut. He fell to the Spaniard in straight sets at last year’s Davis Cup Finals, 7-6(3), 6-3.
