Egor Gerasimov earned his biggest and best career win on Friday at St. Petersburg by knocking off 2019 US Open semifinalist and World No.13 Matteo Berrettini 7-6(5) 7-6(3) to reach the last four.
The 26-year-old Belarusian, ranked 119 in the world, failed to convert any of his six break points but he held firm in the tiebreakers and won the final four points of the match to send Berrettini packing.
Berrettini served eight aces and earned three break points but the Italian could not earn a break either—he dropped to 35-17 on the season.
Erasimov, who is into his first career ATP semifinal, improves to 7-4 on the season. He lost his only two previous ATP quarterfinals in 2018, at Cabo San Lucas to Juan Martin del Potro and at Moscow to Adrian Mannarino.
He will face either Daniil Medvedev or Andrey Rublev in the semifinals. Medvedev, seeded first, and Rublev, seeded fifth, have met only once previously with Medvedev notching a straight-sets win this summer in Cincinnati.
In other action on Friday in St. Petersburg, Borna Coric chugged into the semifinals with a 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud. The Croatian has now won back-to-back matches for the first time since June and he will face Portugal’s Joao Sousa in the semis.
Sousa defeated 2010 champion Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6(8) 6-2.
