Unexpected? Yes.
Happening? Absolutely.
Janko Tipsarevic prolonged his stay at his last ATP even with a 6-1 6-1 thumping of Italy’s Fabio Fognini.
The 35-year-old Serb has now won all four sets he has played in Stockholm and dropped just eight games. He will face Lucky Loser Yuichi Sugita for a spot in his first ATP semifinal since 2016 on Friday in Sweden.
"In one word, it's unexpected," Tipsarevic said according to ATPTour.com. "I will tell you that. First of all, I barely got in. I didn't realize I'd play this week and beating a Top 10 player one and one, makes me incredibly happy and proud. I didn't give him an opportunity to get back into the match."
Tipsarevic dominated on return in the 62-minute contest, earning 15 break points and winning 34 of 58 return points. He broke serve six times and was broken only once against the World No.12.
Elsewhere in Stockholm, Denis Shapovalov moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-4 7-6(3) victory over Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in a battle of 20-year-olds.
Shapovalov, ranked 34, improved to 28-24 on the season with his win and reaches his seventh quarterfinal of 2019.
Pablo Carreno Busta also advanced with a 6-3 7-6(2) over Italy’s Gianluca Mager.
