Keeping up with the game of tennis, by the numbers. Each day at Tennis Now we’ll give you a fresh set—Here’s a numerical rundown of all the amazing tennis we saw at Indian Wells and Miami.
101
Number of titles earned by Roger Federer. The Swiss claims his fourth career Miami Open title by winning his last 12 sets of the tournament.
1999
By becoming the youngest player to win at Indian Wells since 17-year-old Serena Williams title took the title in 1999, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu became the fourth-youngest women’s singles champion in tournament history, behind Williams, Monica Seles and Martina Hingis.
118
Mike and Bob Bryan claimed their 118th career team title at the Miami Open with a victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Wesley Koolhof in the final. The Bryans nab their 39th Masters 1000 title and 6th in Miami. More important, it was Bob Bryans' first Masters 1000 title after undergoing hip replacement surgery last August.
5-1
The career record of Felix Auger-Aliassime against the ATP’s Top 20. According to tennis analytics expert Jeff Sackman of Tennis Abstract, Auger-Aliassime is the first player to ever win his first five matches against Top 20 talent.
9
The new ranking of Ash Barty on Monday. The Aussie claimed her biggest career title at the Miami Open and improved to 18-3 on the season. She defeated Karolina Pliskova in the final and has doubled her career total of Top 10 wins (from 5 to 10) since 2019 kicked off.
40
The age of Ivo Karlovic. The Croatian became the oldest player to ever win a Masters 1000 match at Indian Wells and reached the round of 16 there. He joins the Bryans in that special group of players aged 40 and over that are still thriving on tour.
5
Number of WTA doubles teams that have won the Sunshine Double. Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens became the fifth team when they defeated Sam Stosur and Zhang Shuai in the Miami Final on Sunday. Mertens will rise to No.6 in the world in doubles with the victory.
The other WTA doubles teams that have won Indian Wells and Miami in the same season are: Novotna/Sukova, Raymond/Stubbs, Raymond/Stosur, Hingis/Mirza.
9-0
John Isner’s record in tiebreaks at this year’s Miami Open. The American entered the tournament with a 7-10 record in breakers for the season, but won every one he played in Miami. Unfortunately he could not get Roger Federer into any tiebreaks and ended up seeing his 11-match Miami winning streak go up in smoke as he dropped the final 6-1 6-4.
2007
The year that Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray both reached the Miami semi-finals as teenagers. Djokovic would defeat Murray in the semis and go on to win the title that year. This year at Miami marked the first time since that two teenagers reached the men’s singles semis in the same year. Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov became the sixth and seventh players to ever reached the semis on the ATP side at Miami, and Auger-Aliassime is the youngest to get that far in the tournament’s 35-year history.
4
Number of match points saved by Mike and Bob Bryan during their victory over top-seeded Marcelo Melo and Lukasz Kubot in the semis (7-6(7) 6-7(8) 14-12).
374
Number of Masters 1000 wins notched by Roger Federer. With 11 wins in March, Federer now leads the all-time Masters 1000 win list by 8 over Rafael Nadal’s 366. Novak Djokovic is third with 335.
7
Number of first-time Masters 1000 champions that have emerged from the last 16 Masters 1000 events. In the 78 Masters 1000 events prior to 2017 Rome there were only six first-time Masters title winners.
