Jil Teichmann continued her fine form on clay by creating an improbable upset in the Ladies Palermo Open final on Sunday. The 22-year-old Swiss, who won the Prague title from qualifying just three months ago, ran past Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 7-6(3) 6-2 to claim her second career title.
The victory over the World No.5 and clay-court juggernaut was Teichmann’s first Top 30 win and just the third Top 50 win of her career.
Teichmann ended 2018 ranked 144 in the world, but will rise to No.54 in next week’s WTA rankings as a result of her title.
The No.8 seeded Teichmann did not drop a set in the tournament and battled through a physical 73-minute first set with Bertens before running away with the second set.
Teichmann finished with 17 winners against 23 unforced errors, while Bertens ended with 24 winners and 43 unforced errors.
