CoCo Vandeweghe

CoCo Vandeweghe made her first tour-level appearance of the season and defeated Marie Bouzkova to reach the second round in San Jose.

Former World No.9 CoCo Vandeweghe has made a stunning return to the WTA.

The California native powered past Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, 6-2 6-4, in her first match of 2019. Vandeweghe had been out since October due to an ankle injury; she later suffered a foot injury that kept her out even longer than she expected.

"It wasn't easy. To think, five months ago, I wasn't even walking to be here, playing, in my first...match of the year, I'm just full of emotions," Vandeweghe said on-court after snapping a nine-match singles losing streak that dated all the way back to grass season of 2018.

Vandeweghe, a two-time runner-up at the event when it was staged 15 miles north at Stanford, Californa, saved six of seven break points and won 25 of 32 first-serve points to set a second-round clash with Aryna Sabalenka.

The 27-year-old American, now ranked 636, hit 21 winners to just eight for Bouzkova.

Kasatkina Knocks off Defending Champ Buzarnescu

Russia’s Daria Kasatkina took a step in the right direction on Monday night as she took out defending champion Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-2 6-2 in 64 minutes to snap a personal three-match losing streak. The 22-year-old World No.40 only dropped three first-serve points and faced one break point.

Kasatkina, who made her Top 10 debut last season, improved to a dismal 8-13 on the season. She will hope to keep the momentum going when she faces top-seeded Elina Svitolina in the second round at San Jose.
