Nick Kyrgios was forced to retire from his first-round match with Donald Young at the Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club. The Aussie took a fall at 4-all in the first set and after recovering temporarily, he was forced to pull the plug after dropping the first set tiebreaker to Young.
Kyrgios was already wearing a knee brace on his right knee to start the grass season, though he had claimed to be in good health after receiving an injection for his injured hip a few months ago.
The loss throws his Wimbledon in doubt. The Championships begin in less than two weeks, so the Aussie will be racing against the clock to recover.
In other action at Queen’s Club, No.5-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Adrian Mannarino, 6-2, 6-2, while No.6-seeded Grigor Dimitrov eased past Ryan Harrison, 6-3, 6-1.
18-year-old Canadian qualifier Denis Shapovalov recorded the upset of the day by taking out Kyle Edmund, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4. The victory was Shapovalov’s second ATP win.
Shapovalov will face No.7-seeded Tomas Berdych, who defeated Steve Darcis 7-5, 6-3, next.
