It’s good to be the king. Just ask Victor Estrella Burgos, who saved a match point to claim his third consecutive Ecuador Open title with a 6-7(2), 7-5, 7-6(6) victory over Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi.
The triumph was Estrella Burgos’ third three-set victory at this year’s event, and he won four of six tiebreakers to help his cause.
The 36-year-old has now won 15 consecutive matches at the event, and collected six of those wins in deciding sets.
On Sunday he won for the third time this week after dropping the opening set, coming back from the loss of the opener and saving a match point while trailing 6-5 in the third-set breaker, winning the final three points to cross the finish line in two hours and 33 minutes.
Lorenzi was bidding for his second career final. The 35-year-old was playing Estrella Burgos for the first time. He rallied from a break down in the third set to force the tiebreaker, and he fought back from 4-2 down in the deciding breaker to earn his match point.
