What's at Stake at the 2025 Australian Open?

As qualifying kicks off at the 2025 Australian Open we are here to contemplate the myriad storylines that await tennis fans in the second week of January. What’s at stake this year in Australia? We take a look at some of the big milestones that could be achieved during the Aussie fortnight:

Tennis Express

25 in 25?

Novak Djokovic enters 2025 looking to stand atop the all-time singles Grand Slam titles list. Currently tied with Margaret Court, Djokovic could remove the controversial Aussie from that summit by winning his 25th major title, and also win a record 11th major title down under.

Threepeat for Aryna?

Aryna Sabalenka is looking for the Aussie Open threepeat this year in Melbourne, and if the top seed can pull it off she’ll become the first woman to achieve the feat since Martina Hingis in 1999. It would be Sabalenka’s fourth major title.

Sinner and Sabalenka: Hard Court Mavens

Both Jannik Sinner and Sabalenka ran the table at the hard court majors last year, winning all 14 Grand Slam matches they played on the surface. Can they both get to 21?

Carlos at 21

Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest player to win the RG and Wimbledon titles back-to-back last year, and he equalled the Open Era record for most Grand Slam men’s singles titles before turning 22. Alcaraz is tied with Boris Becker and Mats Wilander at four majors win while still 21 – he can break that record at the Australian Open.

100 for Nole

At 94-9 overall, Djokovic could reach the 100-win mark at the Australian Open by reaching the final. The Grand Slam king has at least 90 wins at all four majors, but has never ticked 100 at a single Slam. He can also do it at Roland-Garros (96 wins) and Wimbledon (97 wins) this year.

With 377 Grand Slam match wins to his name, Djokovic could become the first player in history to reach 400 at the end of the season.

Rounding out the symmetry, Djokovic would own 100 ATP titles if he can take the title later this month in Melbourne.
