Daniil Medvedev told reporters on Sunday in New York that he regrets the way he behaved on court. He was fined $9,000 for two separate offenses and has been fined $19,000 overall at this year’s US Open.
“Talking about last match, I was an idiot, to be honest,” Medvedev said. “I did some things that I'm not proud of and that I'm working on to be a better person on the court because I do think I'm a good person out of the court.”
But Medvedev has continued to troll the US Open fans, even after his four-set victory over Dominik Koepfer on Sunday.
It has been a crazy US Open, with Coco-Mania and the 15-year-old’s press conference, Novak Djokovic’s retirement, Carla Suarez Navarro’s $40k fine for lack of effort.
But Medvedev’s theatrical post-match speeches and wild celebrations have to be the strangest.
The Russian is truly embracing his role as the villain in New York City.
Hey, whatever works.
After the match Medvedev tried to explain his actions, but his words don’t entirely match his gestures.
“I was just, during my match I was completely focused,” he said. “After the match, I engaged a little bit with the crowd. But we all know how New York crowd can be. It's probably the most electric crowd in the world, I think. Especially, I mean, playing this week on big courts, I could feel it. Today I was just engaging with the crowd and hopefully -- hopefully it was fun for them and for me. As I said, it gave me a lot of energy to win.”
