Hingis: Bring Back Variety, Strategy

Martina Hingis celebrates her 37th birthday in two weeks with a simple wish: Bring back the variety to women's tennis.

Fresh off sweeping the US Open doubles and mixed doubles championships, 25-time Grand Slam champion Hingis says in this era of power-based baseline tennis she sometimes feels versatility is a "forgotten" art on the WTA Tour.

The Hall of Famer is optimistic her brand of creative all-court tennis predicated on anticipation, acute angles, taking the ball on the rise, finesse and the ability to finish at net, will return as an antidote to baseline bashers.

"Sometimes I did complain that I want to see a bit more variety and a little bit of strategy in the game," Hingis told CNN in a new interview. "You see that more in the men's tennis, but eventually women will return to that."

"Once you are able to control that power, [you] have the variety out there again," Hingis told CNN. "Sometimes I think that's forgotten. Hey, tennis is a game. It's not just sheer power!"
