If the French are to make this year’s Davis Cup finals, they’ll have to do it without their two top-ranked players. World No. 8 Gael Monfils was ruled out of this weekend’s tie with Croatia due to a knee problem, according to the FFT. The news comes on the heels of world No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s knee injury. Tsonga was forced to pull out of his quarterfinal with Novak Djokovic at the U.S. Open and will also miss the tie.
Fortunately for France, the nation has two other Top 20 players—22-year-old Lucas Pouille (world No. 18) and Richard Gasquet (world No. 17)—who will step in to contest the singles rubbers in Zadar, Croatia this weekend.
Pouille, a quarterfinalist at the last two majors, defeated Jiri Vesely to help France to a 3-1 win over the Czechs in July. It was the 22-year-old’s first Davis Cup tie. Gasquet was stunned by Kyle Edmund in the first round at the U.S. Open. The Frenchman owns an 11-8 lifetime record in Davis Cup singles rubbers.
Croatia will feature Marin Cilic and Borna Coric as its singles players.
The two nations have not met since 2004, when the French defeated the Croatian team in Metz, behind two singles victories by Arnaud Clement.
