After her 6-4, 6-2 loss to Ekaterina Makarova in Wednesday’s US Open quarterfinals, Victoria Azarenka’s PR team informed reporters that the Belarusian had suffered from food poisoning on Tuesday and was unable to practice ahead of her second Grand Slam quarterfinal of 2014:
When asked during her post-match press conference, Azarenka had the following to say: “No, I didn't practice yesterday,” she said.
Reporters, naturally wanting her to elaborate, pressed further, but Azarenka didn’t want to dwell or take credit for Makarova, who has now beaten her twice in a row.
“Guys, I'm not going to make excuses for myself,” she said. “You can ask me 20 times the same question. I'm not going to make any excuses today. As I said, I did the best I could today. I want to give full credit to my opponent. She deserves to win. She played much better than me today. That's it.”
